Lecture series “Do-gooders – disgruntled citizens” (2017)
Do-gooders – disgruntled citizens: Ethical aspects of social debate.
2. Lecture series organised by the Forum for Integration and Intercultural Dialogue FAU INTEGRA
Do-gooders – disgruntled citizens: Two terms (Gutmenschen and Wutbürger) have found their way into the German language that seem a fitting introduction to the current conflicting positions in society and portray the range of positions defended by political stakeholders within this discourse. The most interesting thing about these terms is that they are generally used as defamatory terms aimed at discrediting political opponents. The interdisciplinary series of lectures explores the situation from a variety of expert perspectives, discussing the significance of the fact that public processes aimed at forming opinion are becoming increasingly polarised and polemic. The focus is predominantly on language choices, interactions in society and the ethical reasons for them. The series of lectures aims to reflect critically on current problems in society, debating possible solutions based on scientific resources and competencies. The idea is not only to connect individual disciplines working specifically in this field but also to encourage dialogue with the general public outside the university.
