Lecture series “Distinction, marginalisation and mobility” (2019)
Distinction, marginalisation and mobility – interdisciplinary perspectives on social inequality
4th Lecture series organised by the Forum for Integration and Intercultural Dialogue FAU INTEGRA
Social inequality is one of the most controversial issues in today’s society. Increasing poverty among children and the elderly, increasing housing shortages in cities, precarious employment conditions and fierce selection practices in the education system indicate that the gap between rich and poor continues to widen disproportionately. At the same time, however, social inequality also has a role to play as a mechanism for shaping individual and collective identities and distinguishing oneself from others, leading to the creation of exclusive communities. The aim of the lecture series is to highlight various dimensions of social inequality from an interdisciplinary and intersectional perspective using specific cases from the past and the present. How do different disciplines theorise, investigate and explain the form, causes and representations of social inequality? What are the connections between social inequality and aspects relating to diversity such as age, education, ethnicity, gender and health? The subjects represented during the series of lectures include cultural sciences, sociology, social psychology, history, political science and school pedagogy. In a subsequent podium discussion, representatives in the field discuss migration and diversity.
